Mental Health Services for Children, Adolescents, Adults & Families

Whether struggling with an isolated instance of depression or anxiety or coping with a severe and persistent mental health issue, The Guidance Center has programs that can help individuals regain control of their emotional, social and psychological wellbeing.

Our programs offer the opportunity for a better quality of life for people with mental illness by providing therapeutic and rehabilitative services, a sense of purpose and belonging and the potential for a more productive lifestyle.

Our treatment team consists of board certified psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers and counselors, certified rehabilitation counselors and other mental health professionals. During 2006, our talented professional team helped nearly 1,500 people.

 

Child, Adolescent, Adult and Family Clinics

The Guidance Center is there to help find the answers when children, teens or adults ask: “Why is everything in my life so difficult? Why doesn’t anyone understand me? Why do I feel so alone? How can I be more successful at things?” Our individual, family and group therapy sessions can help manage issues relating to:

  • Poor communications skills
  • Family problems
  • School Difficulties
  • Work pressures
  • Self Esteem
  • Drug and Alcohol Abuse
  • Child Abuse/Domestic Violence
  • Relationships

Services are provided at four sites: Grand Street Clinic (70 Grand Street, New Rochelle); MacLeay Family Services (590 Fifth Avenue, New Rochelle); Mamaroneck Clinic (930 Mamaroneck Avenue, Mamaroneck); or Lincoln Avenue Clinic (95 Lincoln Avenue). Sessions are held Monday through Saturday at various times throughout the day and evening. Please call our intake specialist to arrange an appointment: 914-636-4440 x245 or x246.

As a complimentary service, The Guidance Center provides a Homework Drop-In Center for elementary-age children (1st - 5th grades). The Homework Drop-In Center is offered to children of existing clients and is open Tuesday, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. at our 70 Grand Street, New Rochelle location. To register, call 914-636-4440 x226.

Rochelle House

At Rochelle House, adults with serious and persistent mental illness receive group and individual therapy, medication monitoring and on-going psychiatric evaluation. The goal is to help these clients integrate into the community as fully as possible and avoid the emotionally and financially expensive alternative of hospitalization. Additional services can be provided by our Vocational and Supported Housing departments. Sessions are offered at our 277 North Avenue, New Rochelle location through either a morning program, Monday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., or afternoon program, Monday –Thursday, 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Supported Treatment of Elderly Persons (STEP)

Mature adults struggling with depression, social isolation and chronic mental illness turn to our STEP program for comfort and support. The guiding principals are: anyone – regardless of age or functional level – is capable of sustaining emotional growth; and that people can – and do – recover from mental illness. The supportive and nurturing day treatment environment helps clients maximize their quality of life and maintain or enhance current levels of functioning. STEP offers a coordinated, holistic approach to recovery, by providing yoga, dance and movement therapy, sewing, art therapies, computer training, music and daily nutritious and delicious meals. STEP is available Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and operates from our 547 North Avenue, New Rochelle location.

New Beginnings Club

New Beginnings is a social club made up of adults who are at various stages of recovery and wellness with a mental health diagnosis. Some are recently discharged from a hospital; others are attending college or working; all add value and perspective to this social and recreational program where peers support each other along the road to recovery. Social trips to movies, shopping malls and other entertainment facilities help clients learn to embrace being part of a community. The New Beginnings club meets Monday – Friday, 4:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.; Saturday – Sunday 9:00 AM – 8:30 PM at our 547 North Avenue, New Rochelle location.

Phone Buddies

Participants in our New Beginning Club often take part in Phone Buddies, calling other mental health clients who need support during the evenings and weekends. The friendly and supportive telephone calls help alleviate loneliness and encourage communication and a connection to others.

Surprise Lake Camp

For seven days, just after Labor Day, mental health clients can relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings at Surprise Lake Camp. Led by peer mentors, the week is a break from the daily rigor of treatment and allows individuals to flourish as they experience new activities in a soothing natural setting.

Training & Community Living (TCL) / Dual Recovery Programs (DRP)

The Training in Community Living/ Dual Recovery Programs serve adolescents and adults who struggle with mental health issues as well as a drug or alcohol dependency. By providing group and individual therapy, clients gain control of their lives and move forward in their recovery. TCL/DRP is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, 9:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m.; Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. at our 277 North Avenue or 95 Lincoln Avenue, New Rochelle locations.
